Mary D. Schoop, 91, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at The Views of Marion. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Funeral service will be held at
11 a.m. Monday, at the church with the Rev. Jeff Frohner officiating. Family will greet friends an hour prior to service at the church. Burial will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Mary was born on July 7, 1931, in Fulton, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Ila (Bentley) Watters the fourth of five children. Mary was born with a fighting spirit, proven by surviving childhood Polio. Mary was a 1947 graduate of Maquoketa High School. On Sept. 19, 1948, Mary was united in marriage to William G. Schoop in Bellevue, Iowa. Mary started working for United Fire and Casualty in 1958 and was promoted to Corporate Secretary in 1988. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Insurance Women of Cedar Rapids, America Legion Auxiliary, and Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mary loved her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud of all of their accomplishments and work ethic. Mary loved family holidays and cooking breakfast in the garage on Saturdays. She was a fun-loving, feisty woman. Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jodi Cahalan of Williamsburg, Iowa, and Chris (Jim) Meggers of Marion; grandchildren, Alison Graham of Marco Island, Fla., Traci (Dean) Hepker of Grimes, Iowa, Kelly (Bryan Furman) Meggers of Marion, Vicki Pitstick of Marion, Natalie (Chad) Williams of Waverly, Iowa, Brian (Nicole) Redington of Robins, Iowa, and Wil (Amy) Meggers of Marion; 19 great-grandchildren; and sister, Verna Moreland of Clinton, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 57 years, William; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Ron Redington; son-in-law, David Cahalan; sisters, Jean Frandsen and Ruth Gifford; and brother, Kenneth Watters.
Memorials in Mary’s memory may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or the Alzheimer’s Association.
