Gene E. Wolter, 81, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Sept. 11, 2022, Emery Place of Lewy Body Dementia.
He was born Nov. 22, 1940, in Waterloo, son of Ernest and Esther Wolter. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa. He attended Wartburg College for two years and graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy in 1963. There he met Valois Peterson. They were married on Aug. 17, 1963, at Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie, Iowa. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his wife, Val, and his four children: son, Gary (Melynda), daughter, Nancy (Frank Gaffney), twin sons, Mark (Maki) and Doug (Jaime); and also his 11 grandchildren, Adam, Austin, Alex, Liz, Noah, Taka, Mia, Emie, Lily, Luke and Harper. Also, many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Lawrence.
Gene worked for the Federal Department of Agriculture as a District Soil and Water Conservationist. He worked in O'Brien, Harrison, Webster and Linn counties. In 1980 he was Co-Chair of the Eastern Iowa Conservation Tillage Show. In 1983 he helped plan the Farm Progress Show in Marion. He and his family attended 12 International Soil and Water Conservation Society Conferences.
He received awards in 1980 and 1984.
Gene was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Marion and was the original chair of the Global Missions Team that took two trips to Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, Mexico. He also designed the pond and planted the prairie and prairie flowers at the church.
Gene's hobbies and interests were fishing, canoeing, camping, gardening and traveling. He and his wife have visited all the U.S. states and 25 countries. Especially meaningful was visiting relatives in Germany and Sweden and their son in Japan, Mark, who has been a missionary/teacher there for 22 years. Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Marion, where a visitation will begin at noon until service time. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park
