OK, maybe it needs an explanation. They’re facts that are fun.
1. Iowa State has five straight winning seasons. Its record is eight, from 1902-1909. Iowa is trying to extend its program-record nine straight winning seasons.
2. Iowa was 10th in Associated Press’ rankings when it beat Iowa State last year, but finished 23rd in the final rankings of the season. The Cyclones were No. 9 when they played the Hawkeyes, but were unranked in the final poll.
3. Iowa’s 7-3 win over South Dakota State last week with just 166 total yards was the first time an FBS team won a game with less than 175 yards since the Hawkeyes had 173 in their 27-17 win at Iowa State last year.
4. Iowa State hasn’t scored a touchdown at Kinnick Stadium since 2014.
5. Both teams have beaten the other by a score of 44-41 in games that went to overtime, ISU in 2011 and Iowa in 2017.
6. Iowa had zero turnovers in its last six games against Iowa State.
7. Cyclones quarterback Hunter Dekkers is from Hawarden, Iowa. The most-famous Hawardenian is actress Hope Emerson. She was the voice of Elsie the Cow in commercials.
8. Iowa has three safeties over its last two regular-season games.
9. Both teams have a prominent Campbell. Matt is Iowa State’s coach. Jack is Iowa’s All-Big Ten linebacker.
10. Iowa is one of two teams that has punted 10 times in a game this season. The other was Utah State in a 55-0 loss at Alabama. Iowa has six wins since 2020 when punting at least eight times. No other FBS team has more than two.
11. Both teams are 0-1 against the point spread.
12. Both have defensive coordinators (Jon Heacock, Phil Parker) who grew up in Ohio and were assistant coaches at Toledo.
13. Since 2017, Iowa State is 29-17 in Big 12 games and Iowa is 28-17 in Big Ten games.
14. Iowa has four players from Cedar Rapids Xavier. Iowa State has one. The Cyclones’ No. 1 receiver is Xavier Hutchinson. The Hawkeyes have highly-touted freshman safety Xavier Nwankpa.
15. Cyclone holder/quarterback Blake Clark is the brother of Iowa women’s basketball sensation Caitlin Clark.
16. Both teams have players from Van Meter, Iowa. Population: 1,386.
17. Brandon Gaudin is BTN’s play-by-play announcer for this game. His first post-college job was calling Orem Owlz baseball games. The Orem Owlz no longer exist.

19. Actress Jennifer Lawrence gave birth to a boy in February. She named him Cy.
20. Ames was named after 19th century U.S. Congressman Oakes Ames of Massachusetts, influential in the building of the transcontinental railroad. Iowa City was named after … don’t overthink it.
