Merlyn ”Brownie” Brown Sr., 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, at St. Luke’s Transitional Care Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness.

Private family services will be held at the Goettsch Funeral Home. A public graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, with military honors.

Surviving are two children, Merlyn Jr. (Pam) and Cheryl (Mike) Howie; three grandchildren, Chip (Kathy), Cara and Luke (Stacey Rich); great-grandchildren, Kallie, Morgan, Demetrik and Connor; step-grandchildren, Mike (Margaret Desharnais) Graham and Angie Graham; step-grandchildren, Lorenna, Ainsley, Ashtyn and Braxton; and his siblings, Maxine Kiene and Raymond (Norma) Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents his wife, Joan, in 2000; and a brother, Merle.

Merlyn E. Brown was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Franklin County, Neb. He was the son of Raymond and Jenny Newbold, Brown. Merlyn graduated from the Naponee, Neb.. High School in 1950. He worked on the Harlan County Dam before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Genevieve “Joan” Taylor on Dec. 20, 1951, in Franklin, Neb. After his military service Merlyn attended mechanical trade school first working in Holdridge, Neb. The couple moved to Monticello in 1956, where he worked for Miller Implement and later Weers Implement before starting his own repair business Brown and Son in 1970. He retired from the business in 1994.

Brownie enjoyed hunting fishing and trapping. He just loved being in the outdoors.
