Dorothy “Dottie” Burger of Hiawatha died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022, at Hiawatha Care Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at noon at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with a visitation one hour prior. Inurnment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery-Mt. Moriah.
Dorothy was born Jan. 1, 1935, to John and Edith Okland. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1959 with a B.S. in Food & Nutrition, Dietetics. She completed her Dietetic Internship at Alameda County Hospitals in Oakland, Calif., in 1960. Dorothy served as a registered dietitian at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, and Abbe Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She also served as a dietary consultant for several nursing homes in Scott and Linn counties.
Dottie married Kenneth Burger in 1970. They owned and managed several rental properties together. He preceded her in death in 2015. Also preceding her in death were her parents; her four brothers, Kenneth, Marlowe, Stanley and Leo; stepson, Terry Burger; and grandson, Tim Frisch.
She is survived by her sister, Lois Hove; her stepdaughter, Teresa Frisch; her grandson, Chris (Makaila) Burger; granddaughter, Laura (Chris) Ganter; four great-granddaughters, one great-grandson and one great-great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was a friend of Bill W. since 1971 and enjoyed traveling, reading and helping others. She loved her family and friends and never met a stranger. If you didn’t know Dottie when you entered a room, you were fast friends before you left the room. Her sense of humor and desire to help endeared her to many.
Memorial donations may be given to the Iowa Alzheimer’s Association, the Heart of Iowa program of the Area Substance Abuse Council of Cedar Rapids, the Family Caregivers Center of the Mercy Medical Center foundation of Cedar Rapids, or the Unity Center of Cedar Rapids.
