James O. Harnagel, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2022. Private family services will be held. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.
Jim was born June 25, 1940, in Hot Springs, S.D., the son of Ray and Minta (Bolton) Harnagel. He graduated from Hot Springs High School and went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and earned a graduate degree in German literature from the University of Wyoming. Jim was a member of the Alpha Tan Omega social fraternity. He was united in marriage to Joan Young on Nov. 19, 1960, in Hot Springs, S.D. Jim worked as a teacher at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, University of Wyoming, University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio, Linn-Mar Public Schools in Marion, Iowa, and Lisbon Public Schools in Lisbon, Iowa. Jim enjoyed competing in league bowling. He was a passionate craps player and loved to collect coins. Jim will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Joan Harnagel; children, Jim (Liz) Harnagel Jr., of Eagan, Minn., and Jeanne (Larry) Isaacs of Hiawatha, Iowa; grandchildren, Craig, Robert, Joel, Austin and Alexa; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Harnagel; brother, Bill (Julie) Harnagel of Arlington, Texas; and sisters-in-law, Edna Gilbert of El Paso, Texas, and Betty Heinrich of Billings, Mont.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Minta Harnagel; two infant brothers; grandparents, Otto and Minnie Harnagel; and brothers-in-law, Bruce Glover, Stanley Gilbert and Bud Heinrich.
Jim’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to the nursing and hospice staff at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital for their compassionate care.
