Richard “Dick” Lee Duncan, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022, peacefully at Promise House Assisted Living in Hiawatha, with his wife and daughter at his side. The Team Members at Promise House provided Dick with loving care and dignity during the final 4½ months of his journey with dementia. Also supporting the family in the final days was Avalon Hospice.
Dick was born on Oct. 18, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Vance and Marie (Lykam) Duncan. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1954.
When Dick was 16 years old, he met a 15-year-old girl named Jean Marie Striegel. They were married five years later, on Sept. 7, 1957. This marriage flourished for just shy of 65 years.
Dick was very creative and artistic, and had a long career in commercial interior design. He began work at Matthew’s Office Supplies in Davenport, Iowa, and continued to progress, culminating his career with owning and operating his own firm, Design Services, Ltd. He also applied his talents to his families’ homes, with unique and bold designs and decor.
Dick and Jean retired to Cedar Rapids to be near their only child, daughter Teresa (Teddi) Smith. Dick took a part-time job at the Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee, delivering groceries, and charmed many female residents at Meth-Wick Community.
In his younger days, Dick served many years in the Iowa National Guard. He enjoyed pool, table tennis, tandem bike riding, reading, cards, and most any form of dessert.
Dick was preceded in death by his father and mother; and two brothers, Don and Bob Duncan. He is survived by his wife, Jean Duncan of Cedar Rapids; sister, Pam (Steve) Marolf of Wilton; daughter, Teddi (Roger) Smith of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Levi and Galina Smith; and many nieces and nephews. Also, special mention to Blaine Moline of Davenport, son of Dick’s high school friend Gary Moline, and lifelong loving friend to Dick and Jean.
Per Dick’s wishes, there will be no services.
