Jack D. Lyster
Cedar Rapids
Jack D. Lyster, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. He suffered a sudden heart attack while at one of his favorite places, Lake Namakagon. He modeled for all of us what strength, courage and resilience truly looked like. His physical challenges over the years were many, but they could never outshine his true determination and unwavering faith.
Jack Dean Lyster was born Oct. 25, 1940, in Leon, Iowa, the son of Bertel and Ella (Halverson) Lyster. Jack was raised in Linn Grove, Iowa, and graduated from high school there in 1958. He was proud to say he was voted Homecoming King by his graduating class of six students. Jack continued his education at Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, Iowa, for two years before joining the U.S. Army. He served for two years in active duty as a chaplain’s assistant followed by two years in the National Guard. On June 22, 1963, Jack was joined in marriage to Colleen J. Tweedt in Slater, Iowa, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. While serving in the Guard, Jack also attended Buena Vista University earning a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Business. Jack began a career with DX/Sun Oil Co. and lived in Cedar Rapids, Burlington, and Philadelphia while with the company. He then owned his own business in Cedar Rapids which he operated for five years. Jack then took a position as chief financial officer with Dawn Donuts in Michigan. The company eventually became a part of Dunkin’ Donuts and Jack resigned from the business after 12 years with the company to be closer to family.
He and Colleen moved back to Cedar Rapids, where he began work as a commercial real estate agent for Skogman Realty until he retired. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa. What was most important to Jack was his faith and his family. He cherished his grandchildren and supported them in all their sports and activities. He loved to tell stories and travel to destinations where he could soak up the sun. Jack enjoyed fishing, boating, singing and cheering on the Hawkeyes. To know him was to love him. He touched the hearts of everyone he met.
Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Colleen; three daughters, Terese (Steve) Dummermuth, Solveig (Lance) Schueler and Kristin (Korey) Ferguson, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Kari (Nate), Alysa, Montana, Taryn, Indiana and Anna; one sister, Jill Meyer of Spencer, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carol Ann Burgeson.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. and service will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a light lunch.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St Mark’s Lutheran Church, Eastern Iowa Honor Flight and Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
