CEDAR RAPIDS — A Hiawatha man was arrested Monday on several charges, including attempted murder, after police say he shot twice into a car carrying his 5-year-old son and the child’s mother in northwest Cedar Rapids.
The woman and the boy were not injured.
Isaiah Martin III, 30, was caught on video surveillance shooting into the car as the woman and child were leaving the parking lot of the Northwest Recreation Center, authorities said. One round hit the front of the windshield and the other hit the rear passenger’s side window where the child was sitting, according to a criminal complaint.
Martin and the woman had been at the rec center to watch their son practice basketball. During the practice, Martin started making threats toward the woman, the complaint states.
The boy was noticeably traumatized and shaking in fear after the shooting while police officers were present, the complaint said.
Police were called to the scene just before 7:30 p.m. Monday and officers found Martin several blocks away with a gun. He faces charges of attempted murder, assault domestic abuse, intimidation with a weapon, going armed with intent, criminal mischief and neglect of a dependent person. He’s being held in the Linn County Correctional Center.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
