John F. Siebenmann, 93, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at UnityPoint Health – the Ed and Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2022, at Cedar Memorial Chapel Stateroom. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
John (Jack) was born on July 3, 1929, in Moline, Ill., the son of Frederic J. and Frances M. (Preussing) Siebenmann. He graduated from the University
of Iowa
in 1951 with a B.A. in education, and was commissioned in the Air Force through ROTC, serving as an adjutant officer during the Korean War. John graduated from Drake University Law School in 1957, and later earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Drake in 1968. He worked for Farm Bureau, then practiced with the firm King, Siebenmann, Koch from 1962 to 1967. In 1967, he founded the Linn County Legal Assistance office in Cedar Rapids which received an American Bar Association a
ward for innovation in easing access to legal services. In 1971, John was elected Cedar Rapids Municipal Judge, becoming Linn County District Associate Judge following reorganization of the state court system during the 1970s. His 24-year tenure included serving as a Juvenile Court judge for four years. He retired in 1996.
In retirement, John was a devoted member of the Cedar Rapids Noon Lion’s Club, and enjoyed attending Cedar Rapids Kernels home games and was a staunch fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He and his wi
fe enjoyed spending part of their summers in Duluth, Minn. Most importantly, he was a long-time, faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he served in a wide variety of offices, including congregational president. For 35 years, Jack and his wife were members of the same home Bible study group with some of their closest friends.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nancylee Siebenmann of Cedar Rapids; children, John H. and Lori J. Siebenmann; and sister, Virginia Butler.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother, Frederic II.
The family wishes to thank all of the members of his Hospice team, as well as his overnight care assistant, Jessica.
