Nancy Dinges Powers
Iowa City
Nancy Dinges Powers passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of July 5. She was born on Aug. 7, 1929, in Evanston, Ill., to John McCorkle Dinges and Esther Holloway Dinges. She was raised with her brother, John M. (Jack) Dinges, in Bedford, Iowa, and graduated from Bedford High School. From there, she graduated Iowa State University in 1951 with a degree in education and dedicated herself to helping children with physical disabilities.
She married her college sweetheart, Dr. William James Powers, on Aug. 22, 1953. In their early years, they lived in Duluth, Minn., Fort Bragg, N.C., and Vinton, Iowa. In 1961 they moved to Iowa City where (Dr.) William Powers entered the practice of pathology medicine at Mercy Hospital. It is there where she raised her family and remained until her passing. Her special places on earth were Colorado, where she spent much time as a child with her family, and Naples, Fla., where she loved to walk on the beach, collect seashells and enjoy sunsets.
Nancy was very involved in community activities and organizations throughout her life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Chapter KP PEO, NN Book Club, Mercy Guild and Charter Member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She served as co- superintendent of First Presbyterian Church School and chairman of the Christian Education Committee. She was president of Mercy Guild, president of Hoover Elementary and Southeast Junior High Parents Organizations. She served as a voluntary tour guide at Old Capital for many years. She was passionate about gardening, flower beds and was an avid book reader. Her grandchildren were very special to her and she always wanted to know what they were doing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother. She is succeeded in life by her children, Susan J. Powers, Sugarland, Texas, and Thomas J. Powers (wife Carrie A. Powers), Tulsa, Okla. Her grandchildren were Katherine J. Powers, Houston, Texas, and Alexa, Ryan and Rebecca Powers, Tulsa, Okla.
