IOWA CITY — 'This,' said Georges Niang, 'is crazy.'
The former Iowa State second-team All-America basketball player flew from Utah to Iowa this weekend to attend Saturday's Iowa State-Iowa football game at Kinnick Stadium.
'I've never done this before in Iowa City,' Niang said in a congested tailgating area just off Melrose Avenue. 'This is pretty amazing. Awesome.'
Niang, a third-year pro, signed a guaranteed contract for the 2018-19 season with the NBA's Utah Jazz in July. But on Saturday his mind was on football.
'I wanted to come see the Cyclones take home a victory,' he said.
Niang was at the game with friend Robbie Maass of Ellsworth, 20 miles north of Ames.
'It's like walking around with the Pope,' Maass said.
