Dean “Deano” Merlyn Martensen, 85, of Marion, Iowa, passed away Monday, July 4, 2022, at his home. A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 9. A Celebration of Life will follow the visitation and begin at 3 p.m.
Dean was born Octob. 25, 1936, to Melvin and Vera (Wesphal) Martensen in Anamosa, Iowa. He graduated from Wyoming High School. Dean enlisted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean conflict. He married Janet Smith on Oct. 14, 1978, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dean gave many years of service as a welder for Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric what is now Mid-American Energy.
He enjoyed to bowl, go boating, playing softball with his coworkers, watching sports and spending time at his winter home in Arizona. For several years, he didn’t know a stranger and enjoyed life on his terms. He was loved and will be missed by all that knew him.
Dean is survived by his spouse Janet Martensen; children, Pam (Lance) Scott of Toddville, Diane (Loren) Franck of Swisher, Laura Martensen and Carol Martensen Luth of Cedar Rapids; stepchildren, Kathy (Randy) McNeal of Marion, Jeff (Kathy) Vincent of Cedar Rapids and Paula (Steve) Sloan of Rancho Palo Verdez, Calif.; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Vern.
