The daughter of Martin James O’Connor and Dorothy O’Connor; graduated from the State University of Iowa, now called University of Iowa. She was teaching when she met Dr. Richard Hingtgen on a blind date. Three months later they were married in Tucson, Ariz., at the Davis Monthan Air Force Chapel on Sept. 14, 1957. Rich and Joy celebrated 64 years together. While raising their kids, Rich and Joy took trips to Tucson, where they enjoyed their southwest friends, sunshine and ethnic Mexican food. In 1997, they purchased a condo so they could enjoy the Arizona sunsets six months out of the year. Rich and Joy were living their best life between the summers in Iowa and the winters in Arizona and did so until 2019.
Their children and spouses are Todd and Tammy Hingtgen, Peter and Laurie Hingtgen, Beth and Terry Collom, Cara and Randy Van Fleet, Leah, and Chris Montague; grandchildren, Tracie Marshall, Taylor Hingtgen, Jenn Miller, Allison Couch, Kate Westbrooks, Annie Collom, and Jake, Julia and Lexa Van Fleet; great-grandchildren, Norah, Elliott, Jones Joyce, Finley, Max, Teresa, J.J. and Emma; and her beloved cats were Charlie, Katherine, Lizzy and Merty.
Joy's favorite things were coin purses, writing letters, going to the post office, substitute teaching, theater, jazz concerts, quilts, $2 bills, snickers, antique stores, black jellybeans and saying Too-da-loo instead of goodbye!
