Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity broke ground Thursday on its first “Women Build” home in Coralville. By the end of this year, organizers hope to have taught more women how to build while constructing a house for a local family that came to the United States 10 years ago in search of a safer, more stable life.

$20M in federal pandemic funds will help build 91 homes
The Iowa Home Grant will pay to construct six new houses in Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity’s territory, which includes Linn and Benton counties. It’s one of 16 home grants that were announced by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Thursday.
As manager of Habitat for Humanity’s The ReStore Rachel Bromann knows that first hand because every donation and sale helps fund the cost of someone’s new home.
Homes for Iowa, started in 2019, aims to satisfy two of Iowa’s biggest needs — training workers for in-demand jobs and building affordable housing for Iowa communities. The program at the Newton Correctional Facility supports several apprenticeship programs for offenders.
