Gary Williams, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away at Hallmar of Mercy on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel Stateroom.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with the Pastor Julie Wehner officiating. A livestream of the service will be available on the Cedar Memorial website under Gary Williams obituary under the video tab, starting on Wednesday, June 22 at 4 p.m.
Gary was born on Jan. 2, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of the late Darrell and Nellie (Argo) Williams. On June 26, 1960, Gary married the love of his life, Diane Teigen in Rochester, MN. Gary received his Bachelor’s degree from Coe College and his Master’s degree in Administration and Physical Education from the University of Iowa in 1969. He coached many sports at Cedar Rapids, Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington. He was the coach of the 1979 Iowa State Championship Girls Volleyball Team. After Kennedy and Washington, Gary continued to coach at Coe College, where he won a conference title. He was voted the “Most Popular Teacher” several times from the students at Kennedy High School. He is a member of the Iowa Coaching Hall of Fame as well as the Iowa Teachers’ Union. Gary was a longtime teacher in the Cedar Rapids Public School System. He was a member of St. Paul’s UMC for many years. Gary was an avid fisherman, hunter, and beloved family man. He made everyone feel important from his students to his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish Gary’s memory are his wife, Diane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his children, Todd (Sharon) Williams of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tami (John) McIntyre of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his grandchildren, Mackenzie (Nate) Hatch, Zach (Hanna) Williams, Cody McIntyre and Ryley McIntyre, all of Cedar Rapids; and his great-grandchildren, Tomi Lynn, Beckett, Brigham, Teagan, Nashton and Evelyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joan Fulton.
