Senators claim AR-15s needed for ‘varmints’

I just heard Sen. John Thune of South Dakota and Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana justify the continued sale of military-style weapons like AR-15s in order to keep down the varmint population.
Query: Is there not an inherent danger in two political varmints legitimizing the blowing away of other varmints by AR-15s?
