Roy Ernest Clayton, 65, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Roy was born on Sept. 22, 1956, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Ernest and Juanita (Dameron) Clayton Jr. He was a 1975 graduate of Beaumont High School in St. Louis and went on to attend Washington University. Throughout high school he played varsity tennis and was captain of the tennis team. Roy was his class valedictorian and president of the National Honors Society. On Dec. 20, 1980, Roy was united in marriage to Pam Porter, in Cedar Rapids. He worked at McDonalds as manager for 20 years.
In 2013 he started working for Eastern Iowa Health Center until retirement. Roy was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Rams. He loved spending time with his family and puppies, Cobie and Missy. Roy was an avid cook, loved to bar-b-que and tend his garden, especially his tomato plants. He was a devoted family man, hard worker and made friends everywhere he went. Roy served as a mentor to many young people throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Roy is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Pam Clayton of Marion; children, Jason Porter (Kandice, Jason Jr., Jack, Nathan and Harlan), Corey Clayton (Jasmine, Leah, Mariah and Giovonni) and Chevonne Clayton (Travon and Julian); brothers, Robert (Cheryl) Campbell of Florissant, Mo., and Bernard Clayton of Cedar Rapids; niece, Carol Louise Campbell of Florissant; and nephew, Robert Campbell II of Florissant.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Angelo “Lolo” Porter.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff and physicians of St. Luke’s ICU for the wonderful care they gave Roy.
A memorial fund in Roy’s name has been established.
