Linn County can be a leader in safe, renewable energy

Last week I had the chance to attend Linn County’s technical review meeting on the proposed Duane Arnold Solar project. The questions asked of the developer, and corresponding answers highlighted just how much research and analysis went into this proposed project. It was clear the priorities of both the county and developer were focused on creating a standard for solar projects that create a positive outcome for our environment and the citizens of Linn County.
One of the unique components of the Duane Arnold Solar project is a proposed battery storage system. This will enable the use of renewable energy during peak demand at times the solar panels are not generating energy. As business manager for IBEW local 405 I have spent my career working on complicated electrical systems. These battery storage units are safe, monitored 24‐7 by trained technicians with emergency shut-‐offs should an issue arise. The developer has hosted local first responders and Linn County Emergency Management to walk through the safety protocols of the battery system so they are familiar with their operation.
As the Duane Arnold Solar project continues through the permitting process, I encourage the community and Board of Supervisors to consider the facts as well as the due diligence both the applicant and county staff have placed into the project proposal. The project has the opportunity to make Linn County a leader in safe renewable energy generation.
