Dorothy J. Hawkes, 97, of Amana, passed away, Friday evening, May 13, 2022, at Colonial Manor of Amana. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the High Amana Cemetery, High Amana, Iowa, with Elder Emilie Hoppe officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials in Dorothy's honor may be directed to the family. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Dorothy Jane Nagel was born Aug. 17, 1924, in rural Amana, Iowa, the daughter of John Nagel and Katy Hetz Nagel. She received her education in the High Amana School. Dorothy worked as a weaver at the Amana Woolen Mill for many years until it closed. She then worked for Schanz Furniture sanding and finishing the wood products. In 2016, Dorothy moved into Colonial Manor. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery, and reading. She also enjoyed the bus trips that she and Linda Puegner took touring various U.S. cities.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter-in-law, Deborah Hawkes of South Amana; granddaughters, Dee Oujiri (Steve) of Lakeville, Minn., and Chanda Adams (Keven) of Maryville, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Alana and Aaron Adams, and Connor and Ellie Oujiri; along with nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Hawkes, in October of 2012; and siblings, Leona Doehrmann, George Nagel, Ruth Stumpff, Leroy Nagel and Wallace Nagel (in infancy).
The family wishes to thank Colonial Manor of Amana and Essence of Life Hospice for the excellent care and friendship extended to Dorothy during her last years.
