Paul Dwayne Straub, 90, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Bickford of Marion. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, at the funeral home with an additional visitation an hour prior to service. A livestream of Paul's funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page, under "photos and videos or media," starting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Cremation will follow the service, and burial will take place at a later date.
Paul was born on March 31, 1932, in Onslow, Iowa, the son of Adam Straub and Grace Reid. Paul grew up on a farm and graduated from Maquoketa High School, where he lettered in wrestling and was a member of 4H and FFA. Paul was married to Wanda Rich in 1955, they later divorced. He later married Arlene Elam they were married for 35 years. Paul married Anna Nickerson in 2003 after meeting on the tennis court. Paul owned and operated Straub Painting and Decorating Co. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was Secretary of the National PDCA (Painting and Decorating Companies of America) and traveled to major cities in the United States to attend conventions. Hawaii was his favorite.
Paul enjoyed playing fast pitch baseball and fell in love with the game of tennis at the age of 45. He was the first member to join when Westfield Tennis Club opened in Cedar Rapids. He played many local, state and national tennis tournaments. Paul was a lifetime member of USTA and attended most of the Senior Olympics national tournaments. He won a silver medal playing doubles in his age group of 80-85 in Houston, Texas. Paul was also a member of the Super Senior Tennis Organization and was a Super Senior Champion 7.0 team in 2007. Paul and Anna lived in Fort Myers, Fla., from 2011 until 2017, where he enjoyed playing his tennis at the Landings Golf, Tennis and Yachting Club. He loved dancing and country music. Paul was a proud, loving husband, who enjoyed life to the fullest.
Paul is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Anna Straub of Marion; daughter, Pam Straub of Marion; son, Bruce (Delores) Straub of Shellsburg, Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer Harris of Fullerton, Calif., Jared (Amanda) Hupe and Jodi Hupe, both of Marion and Jessie (David) Morales of Tiffin, Iowa; and great-grandchildren, Dominic, Denzel, Marley Marie, Gavin, Makayla, Sophia, Jazzlynn and Hannah.
He was preceded in death by his father, Adam Straub; mother, Grace Bentley; and granddaughter, Sheeley O'Dell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Paul's memory may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date.
Paul's family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for all the loving care Paul received from Bickford of Marion and from St. Croix Hospice.
