RODNEY R. UPCHURCH
Cedar Rapids
On May 2, 2022, heaven gained a Rockstar. Rod Upchurch, 56, passed away at his home following a brave 4-year battle with cancer. Rod was born in Littleton, Colo., on Jan. 22, 1966, to Carol and Loren Upchurch. His family later moved to Cedar Rapids, where he lived for the remainder of his life and raised his family. Rod attended Metro High School, graduated from Kirkwood Community College with a degree in graphic design.
Rod married Lynette in 1986 and raised three children, John, Tara and Ian. Following their separation, Rod and Kat Eichacker shared their lives together and welcomed their daughter, Samantha. Rod had many creative talents, including painting, photography and being the "King of Air Guitar." However, Rod's true passion in life was his music. Throughout the years, he was in several bands with his "brothers" and played many gigs as a bass guitarist. He spent much of his free time on stage or in front of a stereo jamming. He will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.
Rod is survived by three children, Tara, Ian and Samantha; sisters, Rhonda and Robin; brothers, Jon and Jeff Gnagy; four grandchildren; and a handful of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Edgeton; nephew, AJ Slaton; mother, Carol; father, Loren; grandparents; many friends and special pets.
Rod's remains were cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. May 29, at Van Vechten Park pavilion in Cedar Rapids. Food and some drinks will be provided. Plan to "Party like a Rockstar" and give him the sendoff he would have wanted! Rock in Peace!
