Darwin Benson
DARWIN GLENN BENSON
Temple, Texas
Darwin Glenn Benson was born Aug. 25, 1937, in Orchard, Iowa, and raised as a Christian. His father, Paul, died when he was 9 or 10, and he and his five brothers and one sister had to help his mom grow corn, beans, and raise livestock on the family farm. He met the love of his life, Carole, at a skating rink in Osage, where she went every Saturday to practice her skate moves, the most spectacular of which was capturing Dad's heart.
Darwin graduated from Upper Iowa University and taught biology in middle and high school, and he coached baseball and basketball from high school to the little league program at Cherry Hill, where he influenced the lives of many boys who have become fine men. Dad officially retired around 2002, but for the next 18 years he served as Mom's assistant selling real estate. He was an elder at Concordia Lutheran Church, worked there to keep the building and grounds in good shape, and he and Carole raised their two boys in the church. They also raised their grandson, Nicholas, for 14 years, and he loved his other grandchildren, Derek and Gabi, equally well.
Darwin was one of those rare Christians who is utterly selfless, who remains in the background because part of being selfless is not calling attention to yourself. His righteousness was there all the time, but you had to pay attention or you'd miss it. He will be missed.
