Fern K. Werning, 97, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 22, 2022, at Davenport Lutheran Home with her loving family by her side. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 25, at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Memorials in Fern's name may be made to Davenport Lutheran Home or to Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport.
Fern was born Oct. 9, 1924, to Victor and Esther (Radeke) Bryant, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from Roosevelt High School. While in Cedar Rapids, Fern worked at the Merchants National Bank. While her children were growing, Fern was a Cub Scout leader and a Campfire Girl leader. After moving to Davenport in 1970, she worked at the Davenport Lutheran Home as an administrator. Fern was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Davenport and Cedar Rapids and the LWML Circle. She was also a member of the Putnam Museum Guild, CASI, Genesis West Auxiliary, QUOTA Club of Davenport and the ABWA Paddlewheel Chapter of which she received Business Woman of the Year award.
Family and faith were two of the most important things in Fern's life. She led her family by example, which continued through the generations. Fern loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they kept her young at heart. She enjoyed attending all of their various activities. Fern loved to travel not just the United States but also overseas. She was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Fern was loved by the staff and residents at the Davenport Lutheran Home.
Those left to carry on her memory are her children, Wendy (Jim) Keiper, Palo, Iowa,, Kathy (John) Laing, Parkview, Iowa, Dave (Kathy) Werning, Moline, Ill., Bruce Werning, Davenport, Iowa, and Mark (Deb) Werning, Bettendorf, Iowa; grandchildren, Scott (Heidi) Keiper, Julie Ruehle, Lori (Jerry) Farmer, Brian (Amy) Laing, Jennifer (Ryan) Peters, Megan (Jim) Stewart, Alicia (Kevin) Truman, Kristen (Chris) Stull, Tim (Kelly) Werning, Katie (Chris) Willey, Peter Werning, Mackenzie Werning and Kyle Werning; great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Cameron and Callan Keiper, Annalie and Landry Ruehle, Reagan and Leah Peters, Emma, Cora and Brady Stewart, Jasper and Juniper Truman, Mason Stull, Nathan and Brooklynne Werning, and Clinton and Nora Willey; sisters-in-law, Elaine Bryant and Ruth Werning; brother-in-law, Fred Lund; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Victor Bryant; sisters-in-law, Delores Lund, Mardelle Bryant and Virginia Werning; and brothers-in-law, Waldo, Phillip and Ronald Werning.
