Lorene Claire Meyer, 95, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, April 18, 2022. In agreement with her wishes, cremation has taken place.
A private family graveside will be held at a later date at the Shueyville Cemetery in Shueyville, Iowa.
Lorene was born Feb. 2, 1927, in Mankato, Minn., the daughter of Melvin and Minnie (Holden) Gillette. She attended Mankato State Teacher's College. Lorene was united in marriage to Arlo William Meyer on Jan. 3, 1948, in Mankato, Minn. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 2021. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids and to this union, one daughter, Margaret "Peg," was born. Lorene and Arlo were long-time members of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and Good Sam Motor Coach Association. They had several motorhomes and traveled extensively through the lower 48 states. She enjoyed several work-related trips to Europe with Arlo.
Lorene was an avid golfer, she played in the Cedar Rapids city tournaments and had two holes-in-one and a two handicap. She did amateur radio (a.k.a Ham Radio, KØTOF), and was an active member of the Sons of Norway. Lorene loved her grandchildren and spending time together. In her later years, she enjoyed quilting and needlework (knitting and crocheting).
Survivors include her daughter, Peg (Jim) Toms of Swisher; grandchildren, Beth (Vince) Vandreath of Ankeny, Iowa, and Mike (Ann) Speers of Burlington, Iowa; sister, Helen Baker of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Minnie Gillette; husband, Arlo Meyer; and two sisters, JoAnn Larson and Jean Buckley.
