Max was born on March 19, 1928, in Toddville, Iowa, to Leland and Pearl (Boquist) Todd. He was an only child and graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married the love of his life, Ellen M. Burke, on Oct. 23, 1949, in Vinton, Iowa; they celebrated 72 years of marriage together.
Max was a Master Mason for many years. He was a member of Crescent Lodge #25 and the Scottish Rite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During World War II, he served with the Civil Air Patrol in Linn County, Iowa. In 1991, after nearly 50 years of service, Max retired as plant manager from Iowa Manufacturing Inc. and was retained there as a consultant for several years. In the 1950s, he helped his life-long friend, William L. McFann, open and operate Bill's Welding (Lindsey Enterprises).
Max's life revolved around his family. He was thoughtful, caring, and a great and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching them to bowl, play billiards, the piano, hunt, and how to use tools. Max often was found helping family, friends and neighbors in times of need, whether assisting with projects, clearing yards after storms, or sandbagging during floods. With family and friends, Max enjoyed boating, fishing, and water skiing at Coralville Reservoir and on the Mississippi River.
Max and Ellen traveled to Japan, Mexico, Canada, and Nova Scotia. They went on cruises, visited family and friends across the U.S., and for many years after retirement, travelled the country by motorhome.
