Carl Wenholz
CARL RUEBEN WENHOLZ
Richardson, Texas
2/17/1929 – 3/31/2022
Carl Rueben Wenholz, 93, of Richardson, Texas, left us and joined his eternal father in the early hours of March 31, 2022, in the comfort and peace of his home.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nancy; his daughter, Karen Mercer and her husband, Brad Mercer, PhD., of Silver Spur, Md.; his eldest son, David Wenholz and his wife, Andrea, of Dripping Springs, Texas; as well as his youngest son, Mark Wenholz and his wife, Kari, of Mesquite, Texas. Carl is also survived by his six grandchildren, Martin Mercer, Stephen Mercer, Kelsey Wenholz, Trevor Wenholz and his wife, Shannon, Claire Wenholz and Ali Wenholz, M.D. Carl is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Emma Jo Wenholz, who was a true blessing in his final months.
Born in Missouri Valley, Iowa, on Feb. 17, 1929, into a loving family during the Great Depression, Carl was surrounded by the affection of three sisters. His twin sister, Carol Webb, older sister, Jessie Gardner, and eldest sister, Hallie Edwards, predeceased Carl along with his parents.
Carl graduated High School in Clinton, Iowa, in 1947. He attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, earning an associate's degree. Carl went on to earn his bachelor's of art in accounting degree from the University of Iowa in 1953, becoming the first person in his extended family to graduate university.
His professional career began at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following school. This is where he spent several decades in financial management and met a young intern named Nancy Hyland, the love of his life.
Carl and Nancy were wed Aug. 21, 1955. The couple settled in Marion, Iowa. They attended Community of Christ Church, where Carl was an elder. Carl and Nancy moved to Richardson, Texas, in 1978 when Collins Radio was acquired by Rockwell International, ultimately retiring in 1991.
Carl was a favorite among his extended family and friends because of his infectious smile, sense of humor and warmth. He was a positive, intelligent, thoughtful person. He was active in the community helping the YMCA form tennis leagues and building tennis courts at the local high school.
An avid and competitive athlete, Carl enjoyed playing and watching tennis – venturing to England for Wimbledon. Carl also loved to discuss theology, eat good food with friends, hold Nancy's hand and to sing, which he did on the trip home from the hospital. He was loved, made a lasting impact, and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be determined by the family. Donations in Carl's name may be made to Outreach International, 112 W. 18th St., Kansas City, MO 64108, or online at their website: www.outreach-international.org.
