Every year, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps families pay heating bills and provides peace of mind. Households in Iowa still have time to apply for funds through April 30.
The recent omnibus funding package provided $3.8 billion for LIHEAP nationally, a $50 million increase over fiscal year 2021 to help low-income Americans with their heating and cooling bills.
In 2021, 74,600 total Iowa households received LIHEAP benefits and $31 million in funds were distributed, with $455 as the average distributed per household. Of them, 16,912 Alliant Energy Iowa customer households were approved for LIHEAP benefits and $7.9 million in funds were distributed.
