Today in the Cedar Rapids area we can expect mostly sunny skies, with a high near 61, according to the National Weather Service. Winds from the west around 10 mph. Then tonight, it should be mostly clear, with a low around 39.
Police believe more than one assailant carried out a shooting early Sunday at a downtown Cedar Rapids nightclub that left an adult male and an adult female dead and 10 others injured. Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman told reporters that police were just outside the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge at 415 Third St. SE responding to an earlier call about an incident outside. The officers saw an “exodus” of people fleeing the club and went inside to find the fatalities and wounded. No arrests were announced, and Jerman told reporters the assailants — who police believe are both men — had fled with the crowd. Up to about 150 people were in the club when the shooting broke out. The shooting was contained in the club, Jerman said, and did not spill outside. The incident marked the fourth and fifth homicides in the city this year.
A shooting Friday night in the Cherry Hill neighborhood targeted the home of an off-duty police officer, authorities said Saturday. The officer, who was not identified, was not injured and the shooting was under investigation. Police said multiple shots were fired, and rounds hit the home, garage and a take-home squad car. Police said they received reports of the shooting in the westside neighborhood shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday. Anyone with tips or leads is encouraged to call the Cedar Rapids Police Department or anonymous tips may also be shared with Linn County Crime Stoppers.
