GERALD "GERRY" WILLIAM FITZGERALD
Cedar Rapids
Gerald "Gerry" William FitzGerald, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was taken to his eternal home on April 4, 2022. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church at 211 21st Ave. SW, in Cedar Rapids, with visitation to begin at 9 a.m. Entombment will follow Mass at the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum at 520 Wilson Ave. SW, in Cedar Rapids. All are welcome. Luncheon to follow entombment at St. Ludmila's Social Hall.
Gerry was born Dec. 13, 1938, in Bronx, N.Y., to John "Jack" William and Ann Christina (George) FitzGerald. Gerry graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., and Manhattan College. He was a captain in the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War.
On Sept. 5, 1964, Gerry married Virginia "Ginny" Graham in Bronx, N.Y. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he moved to Iowa where he worked for Rockwell Collins for over 30 years, first as a technical writer and then a quality engineer.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ginny; his sisters, Claire FitzGerald of Yonkers, N.Y., and Anne Waterman of Venice, Fla.; his daughters, Karen (Bob) Randklev of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Deb FitzGerald (Chris Mitchell) of Chicago; his son, James (Holly) FitzGerald of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Lindsay Randklev (fiance, Riley), Derek Randklev and Raelyn FitzGerald.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie Karl; and brothers, John "Jack" FitzGerald and Thomas "Tommy" FitzGerald.
Gerry was a devout Catholic and had a deep love of Christ. His family meant the world to him and he took his job as provider very seriously. He would talk to anyone and was always happy to help those in need. Gerry was a fan of Star Trek, comedy movies, and really bad dad jokes. And, although all food was his favorite, his true passion was for sweets. So, if you get a chance today, go get yourself a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, share a bad dad joke or talk to a stranger. It would make Gerry smile.
