Donald Lou Detweiler, 89, passed away at the Bird House Hospice on Monday, April 4, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born Nov. 6, 1932, in Wellman, Iowa, the son of William Glen and Blanche Ethel (Norris) Detweiler. He married Frances Anderson on Nov. 21, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He served for two years during the Korean War, stationed in Japan and afterward spent most of his working career with Bell Telephone, retiring in his early 50s. After the death of his wife, he met his soul mate Janet C. Gerlock. Together they made a life in Florida and traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as attending many Blue Grass festivals.
Don is survived by his two daughters, Vicki Betts (Mikel) of Iowa City, Iowa, and Vera Ostrander (Rollie) of Solon, Iowa. He is also survived by three beloved grandchildren, Matt Lepic (Nicole), Kari Juhl (Brandon) and Jameson Betts; and eight great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his loving partner, Janet; parents; wife, Frances; and brothers, Ronald and Gene.
The family wishes to express special thanks for the wonderful care given by the many members of Iowa City Hospice and the Bird House.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County or to Iowa City Hospice.
Celebration of life and burial will take place at a later date in Galena, Md..
