Shirley Ann Lighty, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on April 4, 2022. A visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. A funeral service will be held at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with the Certified Celebrant Dr. James Coyle officiating. Interment to follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery-Garden of the Last Supper.
Shirley was born Jan., 20, 1940, in Delhi, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Charles Howard and Pearl Opal (Hansel) Downs. On June 15, 1958, Shirley married the love of her life, Earl Ivan Lighty. Shirley worked as a food service provider for the Cedar Rapids School District until her retirement. Shirley was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Her love for the Hawkeyes began in the mid-40s when she would listen to Hawkeye basketball games on the radio with her brother Cecil. Shirley was devoted to her children and grandchildren, always putting them first. Her hobbies, in her later life included playing on her iPad, and asking her grandson if he was saving his money.
Those left to cherish Shirley's memories are her four children, Cynthia Lighty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tammy Floyd of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kristi Lighty of Hudsonville, Mich., and Kevin (Bernadette) Lighty of Normal, Ill.; her three grandchildren, Andrew Floyd, Sydney Lighty and Samantha Lighty; and her sister, Donna (Verle) Hankins of Manchester, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and several siblings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Honor Flight or to the Stead Family Children's Hospital.
She will be greatly missed.
