‘If you don’t like it, leave’ is a false dilemma

This writer would like to point out that both Stan Thornberry and Gary Kilberger use a logical fallacy known as a false dilemma in their letters to the editor (March 20 and March 30, respectively). The false dilemma is "If you don't like it, leave." Implied in this is an unwillingness on their part to discuss the situation that Gazette columnist Todd Dorman raised in his recent column about Iowa lawmaker transparency.
I've made Iowa my home and retired here. I don't agree with the current Legislature or the governor on almost everything they've done to promote "the conservative agenda." But I don't want to leave. I have hope that, this fall, the majority of Iowans will see that the agenda of the current group of elected officials is unsustainable and vote them out.
