Mary Lois Cazin, 89, died peacefully Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Mary Lois was born Dec. 15, 1932 in Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Lois (Mears) Bowers. On Sept. 26, 1953, following graduation from nursing school, Mary Lois was united in marriage to John "Jack" Cazin Jr. They lived in Chapel Hill, N.C., where Mary Lois was a nurse at UNC Memorial Hospital, moving to Iowa City in 1957.
Mary Lois was employed as a nurse at Mercy Hospital and later at UIHC. She also served as a private duty nurse at Oaknoll shortly after Oaknoll was built.
Mary Lois was an extremely social person who loved people. She always was the first person to offer words of comfort and to check in on people in their times of need. She had a cracker jack wit and loved to discuss sports and current events. She was a member of University Club and served as President of The Newcomers Club. She especially enjoyed her bridge clubs, several of which existed for over 50 years, and the Tuesday night PMS group that met at The Hilltop. Above all, Mary Lois loved her children, grandchildren, extended family, and her many friends.
Once their children had left home, Mary Lois and Jack spent many summers traveling the country on a motorcycle. She referred to this as her religious experience and had many fond memories of the places that they traveled. Following Jack's retirement from the University of Iowa, they spent winters in Florida and, following Jack's death, Mary Lois spent several winters in California with friends.
Mary Lois is survived by her three children, Jonathan (Darelyn) Cazin of Orlando, Fla., Jeannette (Greg) Hall of Iowa City, and Patrick (Dawn) Cazin of Burlington, Iowa; three grandchildren, Lauren (Josh) Bruce, Lindsay (Nate) Drunasky and Ryan Cazin (fiancé Tori Kraft); her brother, Joseph (Fran) Bowers; in-laws, Ron Johns, Kenneth (Mary Ann) Cazin, Julie Cazin, Sharon Bowers, Linda Bowers, Carole Jellotts and Patricia Yandrich; along with many treasured nieces and nephews.
Mary Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2012; and siblings, Thomas, Robert, John, and Beatrice; along with in-laws, Robert Cazin, Don Jellotts, and Jake Yandrich.
