Odessa Redding Stout, 101, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at the Woodlands of the Methwick Community on March 16, 2022. Family
will greet friends 12:30 to
1:30 p.m. March 21, at the First Christian Church in Burlington, Iowa. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A luncheon will follow at First Christian Church.
Odessa is survived by her daughter, Vicki Dillon (Richard) of Burlington; her son, Richard Stout (Nancy) of Anamosa' and a daughter-in-law, Rita Stout of Kingman, Ariz. Also surviving are five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Donald; a son, Robert; a grandson, Chris; a daughter-in-law, Joyce; and two infant great-granddaughters.
Odessa Redding was born on Dec. 28, 1920, in Downing, Mo., to John and Bonnie Redding. The family soon moved to Danville, Iowa. She graduated from Danville High School in 1938. She attended Iowa State Teachers' College and received her teaching certificate.
This is where she met the love of her life, Donald Stout. The couple was married on Easter Sunday in 1942. The family lived in Burlington and Cedar Rapids, where Don was a school administrator.
Odessa loved gardening, fishing, bargain shopping, knitting and sewing. She was a substitute teacher in the Cedar Rapids area for 48 years. In 2008, Don and Odessa moved to the Methwick Community, where they remained active. The couple celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary shortly before Donald's death in 2015.
When people pass away, they take with them a wealth of knowledge. With Odessa's passing, a library has been lost. Despite the loss of her husband and major issues, Odessa continued to be active. She especially enjoyed bingo, bus trips and reminiscing with old photographs.
Even at age 100, her iPad connected her with family and friends. Playing Scrabble and emailing on her tablet kept her connected with the world.
Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous Stroke Camp in Monticello.
