Gas tax holiday would benefit low-income Iowans

With gas prices at record highs a growing number of governors and state lawmakers, both Democrat and Republican, are considering a temporary suspension of state gas taxes to help provide relief to motorists. House Speaker Pat Grassley says it is unlikely that Iowa would consider such a move as the 30 cents per-gallon people would save at the pump would delay projects to improve Iowa roads and bridges. After passing an income-tax cut that overwhelmingly favors the wealthy, reducing gas prices that would provide a greater benefit to low-income Iowans is just not acceptable to Grassley and his party, which we hear constantly is all about fairness.
