Iowa high school girls’ state basketball 2022: Saturday’s scores, stats and more

It’s the final day of the 2022 Iowa high school girls’ state basketball tournament, with three more championship games at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

CLASS 4A CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier 54, No. 3 Sioux City Heelan 40

Xavier outscored Heelan 37-16 in the second half to win its fifth girls’ state basketball title (2003, 2005, 2007, 2013).

Riley Jonker scored 13 points off the bench to lead the Saints (20-6). Mary Kate Moeder had 11, Lexi Beier 10 and four steals. All-tournament captain Libby Fandel, a freshman, totaled nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks. The Saints made 7 of 15 3-point attempts, with Moeder and Beier each hitting three.

Jada Newburg had 13 points for Heelan (23-3), which led 24-17 at halftime. Xavier went on a 12-3 run in the third to take a 32-30 lead, and it was tied at 33 entering the fourth. Newburg’s three-point play gave the Crusaders the lead, but Xavier scored the next 10, including two Beier triples in less than a minute, and didn’t look back.

CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 1 Dike-New Hartford 59, No. 3 Central Lyon 52

Payton Petersen scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Dike-New Hartford repeated as Class 2A state champion.

Jaydn Petersen also had a double-double for the Wolverines (25-2) with 15 points and 12 boards. Ellary Knock added 11 points and six rebounds. It was 32-32 at halftime and still tied earlier in the fourth, but DNH held the Lions (24-3) to seven points over the last 7:15.

Addison Klosterbuer made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points for Central Lyon. Desta Hoogendoorn had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

CLASS 1A CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 2 Algona Garrigan 52, No. 4 Marcus MMCRU 49

Garrigan (25-3) won its first championship after back-to-back runner-up finishes.

MMCRU (26-2), which knocked off top-ranked, three-time defending champion Newell-Fonda in the semifinals, rallied from 13 down to tie it at 46 with 2:39 left. Audi Crooks scored on the block to give the Golden Bears the lead back and Molly Joyce hit two free throws to make it a four-point game. MMCRU had two 3-point attempts in the final seconds to tie, but they were off the mark.

Joyce scored 17 points, while Crooks had 15 and 13 rebounds for Garrigan. Taylor Harpenau and Mya Holmes led MMCRU with 11 points apiece. Emily Dreckman had 10.
