Shaping a vision of success

I grew up near Oskaloosa, attending one of the last country schools in the state of Iowa, 'Brushstreet #12.” After graduating from Iowa State University, I earned a master's in business administration and taught at the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa. I am a 47-year resident of Cedar Rapids and my wife retired after a 33-year teaching career in Cedar Rapids Community Schools. Our four children received an outstanding education in the Cedar Rapids Community School District during their K-12 years. I have volunteered thousands of hours in the schools. and our grandchildren are students at Pierce Elementary.

I want to shape a vision of success for all students to become lifelong learners by cultivating a school culture in which this vision can be achieved. I will help create and nourish the best possible teaching and learning environment where students feel safe and academically challenged. I will use talent, tools, time, and money wisely. Talent is the expertise of the school staff, and tools are the resources to support staff. I will focus on finding solutions to challenges, help reduce energy costs and make our district more environmentally friendly.

My decision-making process for school board policy is leading by learning and encouraging excellence in our schools. Decisions are only as good as the information they are based upon. My decisions are based on accurate data and facts and community input and ideas.

The IASB Lighthouse Study emphasized the importance of experienced and well-trained board members. Schools can't be data driven; they have to be student driven. I will work to assure students have a rich environment that encourages learning and experiencing different disciplines. Our schools must provide well-educated and successful leaders for tomorrow.
