Maria Carlota Hernandez, 79, passed away Feb. 9, 2022, at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Spring Run Church, 24484 90th St., Columbus Junction, Iowa.
Maria was born Aug. 10, 1942, in New York City, N.Y., the daughter of Mario Perez Hernandez and Brunetta Cifarelli. She grew up and lived in Astoria, Queens, later living in Smithshire, Ill., and Iowa City, Iowa. Maria was passionate about travel, having visited Spain and Europe, as well as many places within the United States. She had a fine eye for art and enjoyed working with acrylic, watercolors and mixed media. She worked as a cartoonist for a brief time, providing the "Cartoon of the Week" at the Iowa City Public Library. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed preparing food for her family, as well as selling her food products. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and learning new things. Maria was grateful to be with her grandchildren in their home for the last two years and loved them very much.
She is survived by her children, Anna Maria Hernandez, 41, Mateo Cesar Hernandez, 38, and his wife, Elizabeth, 45; grandchildren, Alex, 26, Serafina, 14, Max, 13, Olivia, 11, and Michael, 5; and siblings, Janet Susan Hernandez and Dennis John Hernandez, as well as three nieces.
