John David Hamilton of West Allis, Wis., 83, died Feb. 11, 2022. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married Shirley (Meeker) on July 21, 1962, in Cedar Rapids at St. James Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations in tribute to his wife Shirley may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association at act.alz.org.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Meeker); and his parents, John H. and Rose Marie (Poyer).
He is survived by his daughter, Laura (Darryl) Nitsch; son, Matthew (Rebecca Strub); granddaughters, Mattilyn and Mackenzie Hamilton; brother, Bob (Kayleen Woods); and sister, Bonnie (Bob) Byrum.
John graduated from Wilson High School (Cedar Rapids) in 1956 and earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Iowa, 1961, and a master of science in computer science from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, in 1988. In 1961, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after serving in the ROTC during his time in college. His career in engineering spanned more than 50 years. He worked at Ford Motor Co. (Dearborn, Mich.), Cummins Engine Company (Columbus, Ind.), Sullair Corp. (Michigan City, Ind.), Basler Electric Co. (Highland, Ill.) and Marathon Oil (Wausau, Wis.); he held two U.S. patents through his work at Ford and Cummins.
