Iowans should support carbon capture technology

As a steward of the land, I have paid close attention to the proposed Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pipelines that would have footprints in Iowa. CCS is not new technology, however it is new to the Corn Belt, and many members of the ag community have been excited to learn about how it will add value to corn producers in Iowa.
It’s no secret the last several years have been hard on members of the ag community. From two derechos to an unprecedented pandemic, to abuse of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), our ag community has endured through it all. That’s why I was intrigued by CCS technology and how it could provide continued market demand and growth for ethanol. Participating ethanol plants will be able to lower their carbon intensity scores and market low carbon ethanol in states such as California as well as countries around the world. Through these CCS projects, Iowa has the potential to lower its carbon footprint by 40 percent, which would be a huge win for all Iowans
Iowa has an opportunity to lead the country’s fight to lower carbon emissions by supporting CCS technology. I encourage my fellow Iowans to support these projects as they move forward. Agriculture in Iowa is more sustainable than ever, and this technology will keep us that way for decades to come!
