New U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings indicate some of the most dominant and prominent programs across Iowa’s public universities remain strong -- or are at least holding steady.

Both of Iowa’s public research universities slipped in this year’s national U.S. News Best Colleges rankings, with the University of Iowa sliding five spots to No. 98 and Iowa State University dropping six to No. 121.

For the first time in several years, the University of Iowa’s Health Care operation has made gains in the oft-touted U.S. News & World Report “best hospital” rankings, with the 2024-25 edition released this week.

Both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University lost meaningful ground in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-2025 “Best Global Universities Rankings” — which were released Tuesday, revealing a 45-spot slide for the Hawkeyes and an 81-position drop for Iowa State.

The University of Iowa – which did not boycott the rankings like dozens of elite law and medical schools nationally and continued providing U.S. News with internal data – lost ground in its overall law and medical school rankings, although still placing high.

In new international university rankings out Tuesday comparing an expanding number of research institutions and their scholarly impact across multiple disciplines, both of Iowa’s ranked universities continued to lose ground – with Iowa State sliding 26 spots.

Although University of Iowa held steady at its overall national rank of No. 83 in U.S. News & World Report’s new “2022-2023 Best Colleges” assessment out Monday, the campus surged past a string of Ivy League schools on its list of best writing programs to claim the No. 2 spot in the country.

For the first time since launching in fall 2019, the University of Iowa’s new online Master of Business Administration degree has made the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings for “best online MBA programs.”
