Harlan George Henry Witte was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Martin Fredrick and Ida Marie (Sandersfeld) Witte. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. On Dec. 29, 1955, Harlan was united in marriage to Shirley Ruth Heitman in Williamsburg. He grew up in the Williamsburg community and lived in Cedar Rapids until 1988 when he and Shirley moved to rural North English. Harlan was an accountant and vice president for Colonial Baking Co., for 38 years. Harlan was a past member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg and a current member of St. James Lutheran in Victor. He held many offices over the years at Bethany and Trinity. He enjoyed gardening, being a bee keeper and taking care of his horses. Harlan passed away on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022, at his home near North English, at the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of North English; two sons, Mark (Cindy) Witte and Paul (Kim) Witte; four grandchildren, Drew (Lynn) Witte, Megan (Matthew) Jansen, Katie (Martin) Golobic and Lauren (Andy) Dorman; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Janet Maschmann and Joann Strang.
He was preceded by his parents; a brother, Donald Witte; and two brothers-in-law, Ed Maschmann and Terry Strang.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at St. James Lutheran Church in Victor. Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday in the Genoa Bluff Cemetery, near Ladora. Visitation will be from 1 to
3 p.m. Sunday, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Memorials may be given to Essence of Life Hospice or St. James Lutheran Church in Victor. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
