Melvin H. Pexa, 95, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at Winslow House Care Center Hospice in Marion following a short illness. Services to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, 720 Edgewood Rd. NW, Cedar Rapids, with visitation preceding at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Teahen Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Melvin is survived by several nieces and nephews and well as grand-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brothers. John, Raymond and Marvin; and sister, Mildred (Francis) Ormiston.
Melvin was born, with his twin brother Marvin, on April 2, 1926, on the family farm near Guernsey to parents, Frank B. Pexa and Maria Meinke Pexa. He graduated from Guernsey High School in 1944 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict. Melvin was united in marriage to Darlene Rainbird of Manchester on July 24, 1955. She passed away in 1997.
Prior to his service in the Army, Melvin owned and operated the Hartwick Tavern in Hartwick, Iowa. Following his service, he was employed as a salesman with Morton Salt in Des Moines and in 1964 moved to Fort Dodge, where he worked as the ingredient manager for Felco Feeds. In 1977, Melvin moved to Cedar Rapids, where he was employed as a maintenance engineer for the Cedar Rapids Community School District. He eventually served as the chief engineer at several Cedar Rapids schools, including the Monroe Development Center, Harrison Elementary, Wilson Junior High and Jefferson High School. Following his retirement, Melvin worked as a starter at Twin Pines City Golf Course and as a school crossing guard.
Melvin was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed his time as a member of the El Kahir Shrine Foot Patrol unit. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the Elks Club, Crescent Lodge No. 25 and the El Kahir Shrine.
