No divine finish in OT for Iowa
Murray’s miracle forces OT, but Penn State wins, 90-86

Jan. 31, 2022 8:45 pm
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Iowa got a semi-miracle to get to overtime Monday night, but it didn’t get a divine result.
Keegan Murray tipped in Jordan Bohannon’s airballed 3-pointer just before the clock struck all zeros in regulation, and the Hawkeyes men’s basketball team tied Penn State at 66 at Bryce Jordan Center.
Penn State, however, won in double-overtime, 90-86. Iowa didn’t make a basket from the 4:48 mark of the second OT until Keegan Murray hit a 3-poiner with 1.5 seconds left.
Myles Dread’s 3-pointer with 9.7 seconds left in the first overtime tied the game at 78, and Kris Murray missed a jumper at the other end for the win.
The Hawkeyes dropped to 4-6 in the Big Ten with their second-straight loss. They are 14-7 overall. Penn State is 4-6, 9-9.
After trailing 29-20, Iowa got 14 points from the brothers McCaffery to take a 34-32 halftime lead. Patrick scored on a put-back, then hit a 3-pointer. Connor then made three 3-pointers from the 2:54 to 1:26 marks of the first half.
Connor McCaffery had 12 first-half points. His season-high had been 5 points, and he came in averaging 1.2 per game. He had made 4 of 25 threes over Iowa’s first 20 games. He was 4 of 6 in Monday’s first half.
He left the game with 4:01 left and went to the dressing room shortly thereafter after an apparent shoulder injury that put him in great pain. He returned to the Iowa bench with his shoulder wrapped and iced.
For the second-straight game, Iowa played the last 11 minutes and change of the first half without star forward Keegan Murray because Murray collected a second foul and was pulled by coach Fran McCaffery.
Murray didn’t get his first basket of the game until his dunk with 8:02 remaining. Iowa didn’t get another point until Murray made two free throws with 3:56 to go, and not another basket until Patrick McCaffery scored with 1:45 left.
Murray finished with a game-high 21 points.
Iowa’s next game is Thursday (7:07 p.m., CT) at No. 16 Ohio State (6-3, 13-5).
