Donald Norman Baird, 91, died peacefully at home Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville with Pastor Ruby Bongolan officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church.
Don was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Morning Sun, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Fannie (Brass) Baird. Don was a 1950 graduate of Wapello High School. He graduated from Southeastern College, and Iowa Wesleyan College. He moved to Iowa City in 1958 to attend the University of Iowa. On Dec. 23, 1950, Don married Wanda Woodall in Burlington.
Don served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska prior to its statehood. They moved to North Liberty in 1963, where he served three terms on the City Council. In 1984 they moved to Coralville.
Don was employed for many years at the University of Iowa and Moore Business Forms. On Aug. 1, 1984, he became the accountant for C. Allan Poots and Associates. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin and the North Liberty American Legion.
He enjoyed his motorcycles, listening to country music, especially Dennis Weaver and Marty Robbins, and time spent with his grandchildren.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Wanda; their children, Mark Baird of Tucson, Ariz., and Kelly Bickal of Coralville; five grandchildren, Lisa Jarrett, Shelby Bickal, Sydney Bickal, Emma Thompson and Daniel Baird; three great-grandchildren, Bentley, Mikayla and Asher; his brother, Lloyd; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Phillip, James and Eleanor; and son-in-law, Al Bickal.
