Two police officers who wrongly arrested a Coralville man for being an impaired driver without any evidence and locking him up in jail for nearly three months didn’t lose their jobs or face any consequences that were made public.
A judge has upheld the firing of former Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Lucas Jones, saying the termination was supported by evidence of dishonesty and violation of departmental policies.
The settlement will head to the city manager for approval. The lawsuit asserted that Mitchell, a Black motorist, was recklessly shot and paralyzed by white police officer Lucas Jones, who has since been fired for a separate incident.
