Davis: Values will guide my public service
Jeremy Davis, candidate for Iowa Treasurer
Nov. 5, 2018 12:44 pm
My story is like most Iowans' stories. I grew up on a family farm in Eastern Iowa. It was there, from my parents, I learned the value of hard work, determination to succeed and the power of a positive vision. Those principles are simple. Yet they guide who I am and who I will be as Iowa's next treasurer.
As treasurer, I will live by these values. You pay taxes. I pay taxes. We all pay taxes. As treasurer, I will be the advocate for the taxpayers of Iowa. I will fight for the people to ensure the greatest possible financial transparency. I will work to earn the trust of all Iowans, and assure them that their tax dollars are being spent appropriately. I'll also work to identify and eliminate duplication of services throughout state government.
In America, too many politicians have lost sight of core values that, for centuries, have made our country what it is. Fiscal responsibility is at the core of our nation's founding, the core of our families' daily budgeting and at the core of every successful small business that employs our friends and neighbors. Yet it is a value all too often missing in the halls of government.
As Iowans, we expect more and demand better from our elected leaders. As your treasurer, I will hold elected leaders accountable for their budget decisions. Fiscal irresponsibility threatens the promises that we, as Iowans, hold dear, including our commitment to seniors, to our teachers, to our state employees and to our students. I also will work with Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Legislature to ensure recent state and federal tax reforms are implemented correctly on behalf of hardworking Iowans.
Lastly, agriculture is the backbone of Iowa's economy. When Iowa agriculture is strong - businesses are growing, our communities are thriving, and our economy is healthy. As your treasurer, I will be a champion for economic development, fighting for new and emerging export opportunities for Iowa's agricultural and manufacturing sectors, and support efforts that create more job opportunities for all Iowans.
Iowa, it's time for a fresh start in our treasurer's office. My plan is simple: Oversee state spending the same way our families, farms and small businesses oversee their budgets. Protecting taxpayers will be my top priority.
