Gary Laverne Kelly, 65, of Van Horne, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2022, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital following a severe battle with COVID-19. A Celebration of Life will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home by Penny Ackerman. Burial: 11:15 a.m. Friday at Quasqueton Cemetery.Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Due to concerns over the novel coronavirus, family members and friends are asked to wear a mask to any funeral event.
Gary is survived by his son, Joshua (Jessica) Kelly of Atkins; daughter, Amber (Anthony) Walker of Johnston; five grandchildren, Aubrey and Avarie Kelly and Destiny, Audrianna and Anthony; and sister, Ilene (Dave) Loutsch of Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Kameron; parents, Laverne and Frances; and sister, Marilyn Hoyt.
Gary was born in Cedar Rapids on April 14, 1956, the son of Laverne and Frances Zimpfer Kelly. He graduated in 1974 from Benton Community High School. In 1983, he married Brenda Dulin in Marion. They later divorced. Gary farmed and was a truck driver for Iowa Distribution Services. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Gary loved kayaking, golfing and sitting by a fire with a cocktail. He enjoyed family times and will be missed by those who knew him.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
