WILLIAM FISCHER
Swisher
William Fisher, 90 of Northfield, Minn., formerly of Swisher, passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 22, 2021, at Benedictine Senior Living.
William Arthur Fisher was born Aug. 8, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Arthur and Edna (Minick) Fisher. He was raised in Time Check, graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950, and attended both Coe College and the University of Iowa. On Feb. 17, 1953, Bill was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in England during the Korean conflict and following his honorable discharge on Jan. 5, 1955, returned to Cedar Rapids.
On Nov. 27, 1959, Bill married Dorothy Ann Dittmer at Salem United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. After marriage they made their home in Swisher, where he and his brother Jim owned and operated Fisher Additions. In 1963, Bill became postmaster for the United States Postal Service in Swisher. Along with being postmaster he continued to build homes with his brother and also farmed. He retired in 1991 and spent the next years caring for Dorothy as her health declined. Dorothy passed away on Aug. 8, 2015.
Bill was a longtime active member of Shueyville United Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed working in his wood shop, farming, traveling with Dorothy and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an accomplished wood worker and built many beautiful pieces - including cedar chests for his granddaughters that replicated one that had been built for his great-grandmother. Bill and Dorothy and their home became the cornerstone for both sides of their extended families. They lovingly welcome all, with many nieces and nephews spending their summer in Swisher.
Survivors include his children, Beth (Lowell) Cooke of Billings, Mont., Aaron (Sue) Fisher of Swisher and Amy Palmquist of Northfield; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Mick) Goff, Erin Cooke, Morgan, Austin and Jake Fisher, Ben and Ella Palmquist; two great-grandsons, Brock and Brayden Goff; his brothers, Ed (Shirley) of McAllister, Mont., and Bernie (Ardie) of Helena, Mont. his sister-in-law, Jo Fisher of Nebraska; nieces, nephews, Dittmer relatives and many many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his sister, Geraldine; his brothers, Albert and James; and his parents.
A Celebration of Life at Shueyville United Methodist Church will be held in April with the date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Shueyville United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are with the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. Condolences: www.northfieldfuneral.com.
